Dusty grumbled, looking over at Flint. Both were laying in six inches of mud underneath fallen tree branches and brush at the edge of a forest surrounding a top secret government research center along with a group of Joes. They had been there for hours, so long that Dusty had stopped counting. There was a brisk November wind that was freezing him to the bone and with night falling the conditions were going to only get worse. Enough was enough, Dusty thought. It seemed to him that they were wasting their time and that Cobra wasn't going to try to steal anything there. "As long as it takes," Flint grumbled back. He, too, was beginning to get bored, but he didn't want to show it. He knew everything was a waiting game with Cobra. Sooner or later Cobra was going to try something, he just knew it. Clutching his rifle, Footloose agreed, "I hope Cobra shows up sometime soon." "Get comfy, gentlemen," Lady Jaye told them. "It may be a while." She was alittle ways back from the others, sitting next to the Sky Hawk and AWE Strikers which were hidden with tarps and brush waiting for the impending action. Flint radioed to Alpine, who had another group of Joes positioned on a hill overlooking the research center. "How's it look on your side?" "Nuthin' here. You sure they're gonna show?" "Intel says they'll be here." Flint told him, looking over to Lady Jaye. "So they'll be here." So the Joes just waited, not so patiently. They watched the usual traffic in and out of the center, but saw nothing suspicious. And they thought nothing of a maroon van when it approached then passed through the security gate without incident. However, they knew something was not right as the van drove around to the side of the complex and running right into the building, smashing through a concrete wall. The driver, a man in a Cobra Viper's uniform, jumped out with a pistol drawn. He quickly grabbed a vile of a chemical and put some computer disks and print outs into a leather bag with a large red snake emblem on the side. Flint and the Joes immediately sprang into action, running into the complex just as the Viper exited the building. "Hold it right there!" Flint growled. The Viper turned to see he was surrounded, with Flint and his group in front of him, and Alpine's group behind him, cutting off his escape route. "Don't shoot! This is the new super germ- it's deadlier then anthrax!" the Viper shouted, holding up the vile of chemical. The Joes backed up, giving the Viper enough room to run to his van. Before the Joes could react, the top of the van blew off and the Viper escaped on a Trouble Bubble. "After him!" Flint shouted. The Joes rushed back to their previous position. Dusty and Footloose pushed off the tree branches and brush that had been covering the Awestriker and Flint and Lady Jaye pulled off the tarp from the Sky Hawk. Flint was using this mission to test the newest Sky Hawk model. He didn't care that it was two times as fast, carried nearly three times the weapons and two pilots, but that is was easier to handle and maneuvered ten times better than the older version. In no time Flint and Lady Jaye in the new Sky Hawk caught up with the Trouble Bubble which was heading towards a residential area. Below, the others followed on Awe Strikers. "I can't shoot him down! If he does have what he claims he has, we can't risk it exploding in a highly populated area," Flint said, pounding his fist against the controls. Lady Jaye replied, "Just force him to land. We can't risk loosing him either. If Cobra gets a hold of that stuff, the whole world isn't safe!" Flint fired several rounds from the Sky Hawk's machine gun over the top of the Trouble Bubble, forcing it to fly at tree top level. Looking back at the pursuing chopper, the Viper dipped lower and before he could pull up, crashed into an electric pole, sending the pole crashing to the ground and taking out the left engine. The Trouble Bubble sputtered out of control hovering up and down. Meanwhile, three kids, two boys and a girl, exited a suburban elementary school. They were all six graders, best friends and constantly in trouble of some sort. The boys, Mike and Bobby, were twins and it was difficult if not impossible to tell them apart, with blond curly hair and bright blue eyes. The girl, Laurie, was taller than the boys with long dark hair and dark eyes. "Man, we've still got two more weeks of detention! This sucks!" Laurie grumbled. "Yeah, I know," Mike sighed. "Hey, you guys wanna go over to the park or somethin'?" "Can't. We're still grounded, remember? We're suppose to go straight home," Bobby told his brother. "Who cares- hey, look at that!" Mike pointed to the horizon, where the Trouble Bubble could just barely be seen bobbing up and down between the houses in the distance. "Whoa, what is that?" Laurie exclaimed. The three ran towards it and watched as it crashed into a driveway. The Viper, clutching the bag, jumped clear as the Trouble Bubble went up in flames. "Good lord, I hope that chemical wasn't in there," Lady Jaye exclaimed. "There's the Viper," Flint shouted, turning the helicopter and lowering it to the ground. Lady Jaye popped the canopy as the chopper approached the ground and jumped out. She spotted the Viper running through a backyard of a house, heading north. The kids didn't know what to when they saw the Viper running right towards them. "C'mon, hide!" Bobby shouted, pulling the other two behind some bushes. Mike protested, "I'm not afraid of him." "He's got a gun!" Mike turned. "So?" Just as the Viper ran past the kids' hiding spot, Mike jumped out, tackling him to the ground. The Viper pushed Mike off of him and punched the him in the face. But as the Viper got up, Mike grabbed the bag. The Viper, hearing Lady Jaye approaching, just got up and ran. "Whoa, look what I've got." Mike said, looking into the bad. "I wonder what all of this stuff is for." "Get rid of that thing, Mike. You're gonna get us into trouble again!" Terry warned. "Nah, this is cool." "Someone's coming, duck!" The three hid as Lady Jaye ran past. She looked over at the bushes where they were hiding, but didn't stop. The kids didn't realize she was with GI Joe, only that she had a gun. But as the boys wondering if she was going to spot them, Laurie was thinking something else. Lady Jaye didn't stop, only continued after the Viper. The kids heard the police sirens and ventured out once Lady Jaye had passed and was well out of sight. "We need to give that thing to the police," Bobby told his friends. "C'mon." "Damn, Mike, that eye looks bad!" Laurie said with a whistle. "It's nuthin'," he grumbled back. "I bet I get an award or something." The kids approached the crash site, but were stopped by a police officer. "This area is being evacuated," he told them. "But we-" The police officer wouldn't listen. The kids were pushed back by another officer cordoning the area off with yellow tape. Right then the rest of the Joe team arrived in an Awe Striker at top speed. They screeched to a stop next to where Flint and Lady Jaye were standing. "Just head back to base," Flint told them. "Lady Jaye and I will wrap up here." He then walked over to the police. "Look it's G.I. Joe!" Bobby exclaimed. "Let's give the bag to them!" The kids raced over to the AWE Striker, but it started up and turned around, not noticing the kids in all the commotion. "Stop! Wait! Stop!" they shouted. Still chasing after it, Mike said to his friends, "Jump!" "What?!?" "Jump!" And without really thinking, Mike jumped onto the trailer on the back of the Awe Striker carrying a big machine gun. "C'mon guys!" As the Awe Strikers began to pull away, Laurie and Bobby jumped on board. "God, I hope we don't regret this," Bobby groaned. "We'll be fine," Mike told him. "This is gonna be awesome!" It was hours later and nearly dark when the Awe Strikers finally approached the GI Joe base in the middle of the Utah desert. Mike peaked around the side. "Looks like we're where we're going. Uh-oh, they're gonna spot us." "But we-" Bobby said, but before he could finish, both Laurie and Mike had jumped off the trailer. Bobby followed and the group gathered behind some rocks. "What are we going to do now?" Bobby questioned angrily. "Lets sneak in," Mike suggested. "Sneak in?!? How do we do that? Let's just walk up there and give those guys the bag and ask them to take us home, okay? I've fine with having a little adventure, but this is getting a little crazy." "Oh, c'mon, Bobby, don't ruin our fun. If you wanna be a little sissy, stay here." Laurie told him. "C'mon, Mike, I've got an idea." Once the Awe Strikers had gone through the gate and the MPs weren't looking Laurie lead them to the other side of the base. There was an electrified barbed wire fence, at least ten feet tall. So there was no way they could climb it. However, Laurie was able to climb up a tree growing close to the fence, then climb out onto a branch and jump over the fence. Mike quickly followed. "Let's go hot-wire a tank!" Mike shouted, running off in one direction towards a group of Maulers. "Nah, let's get a bazooka and blow something up!" Laurie said, heading in another direction. "I can't believe we're doing this," Bobby sighed, standing on the branch. "Geronimo!" he shouted as he jumped to the other side with a thud. Just then an alarm sounded and lights began flashing. "God! They must have heard you! Run!!!!" They couldn't make it back over the fence in a million years so they began running towards the closed building. But the Joes had spotted them long before Bobby had jumped over the fence. In fact, Breaker was watching them on the outside monitors since they had approached the fence and had sounded the parameter alarm. As the trio raced across the complex towards a parked tank, they were quickly surrounded by over twenty Joes, who aimed their rifles right at them. "Uh, I think we're in trouble," Mike muttered, putting his hands up. On the second floor inside the main headquarters building, Flint, Lady Jaye and the others Joes who had just returned were in a debriefing with Duke, discussing the mission. And, more importantly, discussing what Cobra might have stolen from the government research lab. "What's going on down there?" Duke wondered out loud, looking out the window at all the commotion. The group ran downstairs and outside to see what was going on. As they approached, Duke angrily questioned, "Who are these kids? And what the heck are they doing INSIDE the base?" "They won't tell us who they are and they sort of jumped over the fence..." said Gung-Ho. Duke grumbled, "What kind of security do we have here?" As Duke, Flint, Lady Jaye and Flint made their way through the group of Joes assembled around the kids they could finally get a look at them. "Okay, what are you kids doing here?" Duke demanded. Just then, Lady Jaye got a good look at the kids and said, "Ohmygod, Laurie!" She pushed Gung-Ho and Roadblock aside and approached the kids. "Uh, hi, Alie,..." the girl said tentatively then grinned mischievously. Duke turned to Lady Jaye. "You know that kid?" She nodded. "This is my sister, Laurie." TO BE CONTINUED....
